The Boundaries of the Community and the Soul of the Individual

In the church, there are two situations that often leave me uneasy.

One is seeing truth used to wound people—seeing the door that leads to God being shut, and a soul that is still struggling being pushed even farther away.

The other is seeing sin treated lightly—seeing truth gradually diluted in the name of “acceptance,” until no one is willing to call sin what it is.

These two concerns have often existed side by side in my mind, forcing me to ask: How does God uphold truth without giving up on a single soul?

Over time, I began to notice something: Jesus often responded differently when dealing with a community than when dealing with an individual.

It was not because His standards changed. Rather, He saw two things that mattered deeply at the same time: a community needed to be protected, and a soul needed to be restored. With our limited perspective, however, we often swing between these two ends.

When a Community Needs Boundaries

From the Old Testament onward, God was doing something very deliberate: He was calling a people out to be set apart for Himself. He called Abraham to leave his country, his people, and his father’s household. He brought Israel out of Egypt and gave them His law in the wilderness. When He brought them into Canaan, He commanded them to destroy the nations living there.

When we first read passages like these, God can seem harsh. Why did He insist on such clear boundaries between Israel and the surrounding nations? Would peaceful coexistence not have been better?

But when we look more closely, we begin to see that the central issue was never merely cultural difference. It was spiritual faithfulness.

Human beings are far more easily influenced than we like to think. Israel’s history demonstrated this again and again. Once they began embracing the ways of the surrounding nations, they easily absorbed their gods, values, and patterns of worship along with them. God established boundaries not because He delighted in excluding people, but because He knew the weakness of the human heart.

Sin really does spread. False worship reshapes the way we see reality. When a community loses its boundaries, eventually it can forget who it is.

God Was Never Only Building Boundaries

Yet if this is all we see, we can easily misunderstand God in another direction—as though His purpose were simply to protect His own people and keep them separated from the rest of the world.

But when God called Abraham, His promise already included all peoples: “All peoples on earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:3).

Israel’s election was not the destination; it was the means. God preserved Israel’s holiness not to create a closed religious community, but so that through them salvation might reach the world.

This purpose appears again and again in the prophets: the nations will come before God; the peoples will worship the Lord; His house will be called a house of prayer for all nations. He is not merely the God of Israel but the Lord of all the earth. His justice extends to every people, and so does His mercy.

When God Encounters One Person

When we focus on the biblical accounts of God’s dealings with individual Gentiles, another recurring pattern begins to emerge. God may pronounce judgment upon a people, yet when a particular sinner turns toward Him, He often responds with remarkable welcome.

Rahab, a prostitute from the Canaanite city of Jericho, was received among God’s people because of her faith and eventually became part of the Messiah’s genealogy. Ruth, a Moabite woman, took refuge under the wings of the Lord and received His protection and blessing. Naaman, a commander from Aram—an enemy nation of Israel—sought the God of Israel, was healed, and came to acknowledge the true God.

In the New Testament, this becomes even clearer. Peter had regarded Gentiles as unclean. But when he entered Cornelius’s home and saw the Holy Spirit come upon those Gentiles, he suddenly understood: “God does not show favoritism” (Acts 10:34).

God has never been unwilling to welcome people home. What He rejects is sin and rebellion. To those willing to turn toward Him, His door remains open.

Jesus Confronted Whatever Kept People from Coming Home

This heart of God becomes even clearer in Jesus. In Him we see both truth and mercy.

When people turned the temple into a marketplace, Jesus responded with righteous anger. When He confronted religious systems that distorted truth, burdened people, and hindered them from coming to God, His words were severe. He called their leaders hypocrites, whitewashed tombs, and blind guides.

Yet when Jesus stood before the woman caught in adultery, He did not begin by condemning her. He initiated a conversation with the Samaritan woman. He invited Himself into the home of Zacchaeus the tax collector. When Nicodemus came to Him at night with questions, Jesus patiently explained what it meant to be born again.

Jesus never denied the reality of sin, but neither did He reduce a person to his or her sin. He could always see the soul behind the label—the human being held captive by sin.

What Jesus confronted was whatever was shutting the door to the kingdom of God.

He always knew what He was protecting: truth and souls. He never lowered God’s standard, yet neither did He abandon anyone willing to turn back.

Two Extremes, One Root

Jesus was able to hold together the holiness of the community and the need of the individual soul. We, however, often manage to hold only one side.

Sometimes we are so afraid of losing people that truth becomes increasingly diluted. At other times, we are so eager to defend truth that souls end up outside the door.

Often, in the name of love, we avoid speaking about sin. Every difficult situation becomes a matter of “feelings” and “circumstances,” while moments that call for truth are answered only with “acceptance” and “respect.”

There is an understandable concern behind this. We do not want to hurt people, nor do we want anyone to experience the church as a place of condemnation and rejection. So we adjust our language again and again, trying to make the message easier to receive.

But sin has real destructive power. It tears relationships apart, distorts the way people understand themselves, and sends them searching in the wrong places for what can ultimately be found only in God. When we hesitate to name sin, thinking that we are protecting someone from being hurt, we may fail to see that what eventually causes the deepest damage is often not the painful truth someone spoke, but the problem no one was willing to name.

So we need to ask ourselves honestly: Am I holding back because it will help someone move closer to truth, or because I am afraid of offending them?

The most important truths are often the most uncomfortable ones. Sometimes we remain silent not because we no longer believe them, but because we do not want to bear the cost of speaking—the possibility that someone may walk away. Over time, avoiding the subject of sin can become a habit. People may still feel warmly welcomed while slowly losing their sense of direction without even realizing it.

On the other hand, we may speak in the name of reverence for God while quietly losing His heart for people.

Truth then becomes a weapon rather than a bridge. We listen not to understand, but to find flaws, seize upon words, and determine which side someone belongs to. A single sentence or even a single word can become sufficient evidence for a verdict.

Paul writes, “The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life” (2 Corinthians 3:6). The “Spirit” here refers to the Holy Spirit. God’s Word, when separated from the heart of the God who gave it, can easily become a stone in human hands. The same truth can lead someone toward God, or it can be used to condemn and crush, stopping a person at the door before he or she ever reaches Him.

In the end, we may have defended our position while losing the very person God intended to save.

The story of Jonah gives us a remarkably clear picture of the difference between the heart of God and the human heart.

Jonah was a prophet of God. He knew God. He believed that sin was truly sin, that justice mattered, and that holiness was necessary. He even understood God’s character, saying, “I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God” (Jonah 4:2).

He knew this—and yet he did not agree with it.

Jonah cared about the survival of Israel, and he believed Nineveh deserved to pay for its sin. He would rather see Nineveh punished than forgiven. Even after the people genuinely repented, Jonah remained angry and sat outside the city, waiting to see whether God might change His mind.

But “when to show mercy,” “when to discipline,” and “what a person’s final outcome will be” ultimately belong to God’s sovereign authority.

Jonah may not have realized that he had quietly taken a seat that belonged to God. He disapproved of God’s decision because he wanted grace to stop where he believed it should stop. So when God showed mercy, Jonah objected.

At the end, God asked him:

“Should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?” (Jonah 4:11)

Jonah gave no answer.

Yes, Scripture enables us to discern what is sin and what is not. But we cannot decide on God’s behalf where His grace must end, nor can we take upon ourselves the authority of final judgment.

Jesus told the religious leaders of His day, “You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces” (Matthew 23:13).

Closing a door does not always require violence, and wounding a soul does not always require stones. Sometimes all it takes is quietly leading someone away from the road home—or making them believe there is no place for them here.

Avoiding sin on one side and exalting truth without mercy on the other may look like opposite extremes. Yet they can grow from the same root:

We think we are protecting God, while slowly losing the heart of God.

True Reverence for God Sets Us Free

At the end of Jonah, God did not withdraw His standard of judgment against Nineveh. He did not say that sin was no longer sin or that justice did not matter. Yet He cared for that great city and for the more than 120,000 people within it who could not discern their right hand from their left.

God abandoned neither His justice nor His mercy.

His heart toward sinners is not one of indifference.

So did Jonah fear God? In a sense, yes. He knew God’s command and ultimately obeyed His call. When he was delivered from the belly of the fish, he thanked God and gave glory to Him. Yet when it came to the people of Nineveh, Jonah’s heart was not aligned with God’s heart.

True reverence for God does not mean rushing to carry out judgment on His behalf. Neither does it mean remaining silent because we fear people. It means holding firmly to truth while allowing those whom God loves to become people we learn to love as well.

That kind of reverence brings freedom.

We do not need to please people, so we are free to speak truth. We do not need to defend our territory, so we are free to see the soul in front of us. We do not need to pronounce God’s verdict for Him, so we are free to bring people before God and allow Him to speak.

The person who fears people becomes captive to approval. The person who takes judgment into his own hands becomes captive to his position. Both forms of bondage can keep us from seeing people through the eyes of God.

Conclusion

Sometimes we see someone who has become deeply entangled in sin, yet rarely look back and ask: Long before this person arrived here, were there already wounds, missing truths, or cries for help that no one noticed?

If truth does nothing more than identify the final outcome, without trying to understand how a person arrived there, it can easily lose its pastoral power. The love of God holds grace and truth together.

Perhaps what we need today is not simply more correct positions, but a deeper walk with God and a heart increasingly shaped by His.

Only by abiding in Him can we learn to hate sin while loving sinners; to preserve boundaries without losing compassion; to refuse compromise with the world without pushing people farther away.

God is the One who calls His people to be holy and set apart. He is also the Shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to search for the one lost sheep.

That lost sheep is never merely an issue, a label, or a position.

It is a soul God is still willing to seek.

And perhaps following Christ means more than guarding the boundaries of the sheepfold. It means holding firmly to truth while learning to love those whom God loves—and, with our own lives, helping to keep open a way home for the wandering soul.
